Planning a South Pacific or South Africa Vacation

Hello everyone!  It’s Shannon here.  We are in the DEAD of winter here in Chicago and I know that many of our families are starting to plan summer vacations.  There are many places in the South Pacific and South Africa that make for great locations for family vacations.

There are some misconceptions that the weather will be bad in the South Pacific or that some of the places are unsafe for families.  Well, I am here to tell you that neither of these are true.  Here are some of the places that I recommend for great family vacations:

Australia.  July and August still offer great weather for family vacations.  Kids will love the opportunities to interact with koalas in several locations in Australia.  Additionally, a boat cruise to the Great Barrier is a very kid friendly activity.  Lamington National Park, Cleland Animal Park and the Taronga Zoo also offer kid focused tours and experiences.  The weather at Uluru will not be too hot and the aboriginal focused touring can give a great historical perspective.  Check out some of our favorite family travel itineraries!

Australia - Bay of Fires - Tasmania

New Zealand.  Many children (and parents too) are enamored with the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings movies, which were of course filmed in New Zealand.  Queenstown, Wellington, Matamata and Auckland offer great experiences to see movie scenes.  One challenge with June, July and August in New Zealand is that not all tour operators have excursions during those months, but ask us and we can help direct you.  For a great example of a movie sights vacation for your family, click here.

NZ - Fox Glacier

Fiji.   If your family is looking for a beach vacation, Fiji is perfect.  The  Fijian people LOVE children and many resorts like Castaway, Outrigger and Malolo have great kids programs and activities.  The weather in June, July and August will still be in the 70s and 80s, which makes for a great day at the beach.  Here is an idea for a great family vacation to Fiji.

Fiji - Castaway

South Africa.   The unique wildlife experiences in South Africa will be something that your children never forget.  Many of our favorite lodges near Kruger National Park offer kids programs for special wildlife experiences.  You can couple a safari with a trip to Cape Town for its rich history or to Victoria Falls for the beautiful scenery. June, July and August are VERY popular times for a safari in South Africa.  So if you think you want to take the trip, plan early.   Here is an example of a trip to South Africa for your family.

SA - Camp Jabulani
