Tongariro Crossing – Epic Views, Tired Legs, Full Heart
Ness, our South Pacific product manager, just returned from New Zealand where she did the Tongariro Crossing, here is what she had to say about it.
If you’re thinking about hiking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing—do it. It’s 20.4km of pure magic: volcanic craters, emerald lakes, steaming vents, sacred peaks, and views that honestly feel like another planet.
We had the dream team guiding us—Stu and Kenny from Adrift. Kenny is one of just two Māori guides on the mountain, and having him with us was incredible. His stories and connection to the land gave so much meaning to the hike beyond just the scenery.
The weather showed off too—clear skies all day. We started through alpine scrub, climbed the Devil’s Staircase (yep, it’s as dramatic as it sounds), passed the Red Crater, and then descended past the surreal Emerald Lakes and the sacred Blue Lake.
And just when I thought the views couldn’t get better, the trail opened up and we could see all the way to Lake Taupō. The final stretch led us through bush and lush rainforest, ending at a waterfall and a beautiful carving that honors Ngātoroirangi, a powerful ancestor in Māori legend.
I was exhausted by the end, but didn’t want it to be over. It’s one of the most unforgettable hikes I’ve ever done.

Hot tip: Pack layers! The weather changes quickly up there—even on a bluebird day, it can be freezing at the top and toasty by the end.
