Sports Crazy – Melbourne!

Hi everyone.  Are you a sporting enthusiast?  If so, you should really consider adding Melbourne to your Australian holiday.  The city hosts some of Australia’s biggest events.  And besides that, it is a standout all on its own.  Consistently voted one of the world’s most livable cities,  Melbourne is both the sport and cultural capitol of Australia.  With hidden lane ways and alleys and a ton of al fresco dining, this little gem of a city is very European in feel.

Have a look below of some the most popular sporting events!  They also love their AFL Footie and Rugby  in Melbourne.

Australian Open – mid/late January

This great summer event is held in Melbourne over the last fortnight of January every year. It is a major international tennis event dating back to 1905.

The Australian Open typically has very high attendance, second only to the US Open. There are two main locations – the Rod Laver Arena and Hisense Arena. Both are equipped with retractable roofs. It really is the biggest party in Tennis and the Aussies know how to do it right!  If you think you want to go, contact us, Down Under Endeavours has access to tickets well before they are available to the public.

Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix – mid March

Melbourne is full of sports enthusiasts and the Grand Prix is yet another one of Melbourne’s great sports events! The Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit is a street circuit around Albert Park Lake, which is located just outside of the CBD.  The circuit uses everyday sections of road that circle Albert Park Lake, so if you are in Melbourne outside of the time of the event, you can essentially drive around the track yourself!

Melbourne Cup & the Spring Racing Carnival – Early November

Spring is in the air and it’s time to buy a new dress (or suit!) and frock up for the racing season. The most important day of the Spring Carnival both locally and internationally is the Melbourne Cup, aka “the race that stops the nation”.  This is held on the first Tuesday of November every year. Melbournians even get the day off work or school to watch the race.  Hotels book up quickly around the city, so best to be organised and book in advance!
