Insider's Tip

Days 7-10, on your private Outback adventure, be sure to bring cash with you for purchasing beverages and souvenirs, and also for (optional) tipping your guide. There aren't many ATMs in the Outback, so having some cash before you go will definitely make your trip a little smoother!

Family Vacation: Australian Outback Adventure

This Outback adventure itinerary was planned for a family who wanted a blend of adventure travel and the road less travelled. For this Australian family vacation, we wanted them to unearth the history of Sydney and surrounds, observe wildlife in its natural habitat, discover ancient Aboriginal secrets and explore the world’s oldest living rainforest. For a bonus for their Australian family vacation, In addition, we gave them an overnight in an authentic aboriginal community near South Australia’s Flinders Ranges where they visited sacred art sites in remote Arnhem Land, and they indulged in relaxing spa treatments in the Daintree Rainforest. Day 1  Sydney 
Your Australian travels begin in Sydney, Australia’s largest city. Spend three nights exploring the sites and local culture.  Optional touring: historical Sydney walk; Kuringai National Park; half-day city tour; gallery tour.

Day 2  Blue Mountains (L)
Wake up and head out on a guided 4WD Blue Mountains tour exploring the ancient history of the Great Dividing Range. Discover kangaroos in the wild, waterfalls and other exotic wildlife.

Day 3  Sydney 
Day at Leisure.  Optional touring: Sydney bridge climb,  Roar and Snore at Taronga Zoo, guided city bike tour, Sydney Opera House,  Learn to Surf Bondi Beach.

Day 4  Kangaroo Island
Today you’re off on a flight to the Galapagos of Australia, Kangaroo Island. Over the next two days, our mate Craig, an excellent local guide, will reveal the island’s essence. Optional nocturnal wildlife spotting tour.

Day 5  Kangaroo Island
Spend the day touring Kangaroo Island by 4WD vehicle. Highlights include redgum forests, koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, sea lions and the endangered glossy black cockatoo. Dine on local seafood BBQ and fine South Australian wines.

Day 6  Kangaroo Island - Adelaide
Touring Kangaroo Island. Today’s highlights include Flinders Chase National Park, Remarkable Rocks, Rocky River Homestead. You’ll see possums, fur seals, goannas, echidnas, koalas, platypus and many birds including the rare Cape Barren Goose. Then it’s on to Adelaide for a night’s rest before your next adventure.

Day 7  Flinders Ranges, South Australia (B,L,D)
Your family vacation continues on a 4-day Outback tour exploring Aboriginal culture and the region’s scenic beauty.  Travel north to the picturesque Flinders Ranges. Enjoy morning tea on the Port Augusta foreshore. Visit Wadlata Outback Centre for hands-on interpretative displays about the history and culture of the Flinders Ranges. Travel on to the outback towns of Leigh Creek and Copley.

Day 8  Outback, South Australia (B,L,D)
After Breakfast, start the morning with a visit to a spectacular and secluded Aboriginal engraving and etching site.  Walk through the creek bed and marvel at ancient artwork dating back many thousands of years. Enjoy your bush foods morning tea in this peaceful location. Learn the early history of the Adnyamathanha people. See the remnants of Mineruta a former location of an Aboriginal community. After lunch, visit an Aboriginal site renowned for its timeless cave paintings.

Day 9  Outback, South Australia(B,L,D)
Set out for an early then stop for morning tea in a gum tree-lined creek bed. At Ithala Awi (Italowie Gorge), you’ll rest to learn about native bush foods and experience remote, timeless Aboriginal engravings and rock etchings. Hear a creation story that explains geographical features of the surrounding area. Look for the endangered yellow-footed rock wallabies and other wildlife. Arrive at Wilpena Pound, settle in for dinner before retiring to your deluxe accommodation.

Day 10  Wilpena Pound - Adelaide (B,L)
Today, visit local Aboriginal rock art site depicting the creation of Wilpena Pound (1.5 hr moderate walk) or sleep in and relax at your resort. Depart for the historic town of Hawker and have lunch. Visit the Wilpena Panorama Gallery and enjoy locally produced art, craft and food.  On your way back to Adelaide, visit a cellar door for a quick wine tasting in the Clare Valley.

Day 11  Kakadu National Park, Northern Territory (D)
This morning, fly north to Darwin and board connecting scenic flight to your luxury wilderness lodge, Bamurru Plains. Your accommodation is located just to the west of Kakadu National Park on the Mary River floodplains. An astonishing array of birds and wildlife are on the doorstep of your luxury bush camp.

Day 12  Arnhem Land, Northern Territory (B,L,D)
This morning, take a 20 minute chartered flight to Jabiru in Kakadu National Park. You will meet up with your guide a day immersed in the Aboriginal culture of Arnhem Land. Arnhem Land is perhaps the one area in Australia where Aboriginal culture is still dominant, despite a long history of interacting with other cultures. A local guide will show you excellent examples of rock art on Injalak Hill (Long Tom Dreaming), an area that has some of the best rock art in the country. The view from the top of the hill is simply breathtaking, looking out around the escarpment and across the floodplain. In the afternoon explore a remote valley - stunning scenery, billabongs, and a place to imagine the life of the Aboriginal people who have been at home here for 50,000 years or more.

Day 13  Daintree Rainforest, Queensland (B)
Board a short flight to Darwin and connect on to Cairns. You’re headed to the Daintree rainforest. You’ve got three nights of boutique lodging in the world’s oldest living rainforest. The spa features Aboriginal massage techniques and products.

Day 14-15  Daintree Rainforest, Queensland (B)
Over the next two days, let the expert staff take you out on guided nature walks. The property's natural waterfall is said to possess healing powers significant to women. Your guides will point out bush medicines, foods, and discuss traditional life and history. You will also learn about traditional weaponry and artifacts and experience a cultural workshop. You can take a cruise along the Daintree River, go bird watching, take a 4WD tour, fish, or ride horses. And since you’re so close, you can also take a Great Barrier Reef Cruise.

Day 16  Depart (B)
Early morning departure.  Transfer to Cairns airport, where you will begin your journey home to Los Angeles, arriving the same day. The international date line is a funny thing.
