Itinerary

Day 1

Adelaide: Arriving into Adelaide airport, you will be transferred to your accommodation for the night in this charming small Australian city. Rest, relax, and recuperate from your international flights.

Day 2

The Ghan: Board the Ghan, one of the great train journeys of the world, for an overnight trip in the Gold Cabin through the rugged Australian Outback. Named after the Afghan cameleers who once traversed this route, The Ghan will take you to the very center of Australia. The Ghan's timetable makes the most of the daylight hours to offer unsurpassed views of the passing landscape. From the sweeping Adelaide Plains unfolding before your eyes to the majestic Flinders Ranges, this journey offers a perspective on South Australia you simply can't afford to miss. Red earth and cobalt blue skies – the essence of Central Australia takes on a character of its own with every passing hour. Your first day on The Ghan begins with a light lunch in the Restaurant Car as you travel north towards Spencer Gulf and Port Augusta.

Day 3

Alice Springs: Awake to wonderful views of the Central Australian desert and enjoy lunch prior to your arrival in Alice Springs. Disembark the Ghan this afternoon and enjoy a private car transfer to your hotel for the next two nights, the Chifley Alice Springs Hotel. Situated on the banks of the famous Todd River with its magnificent river red gums, the hotel is only a five-minute walk away from the town center.

Day 4

Alice Springs: Enjoy a day at leisure with the opportunity to take a hot air balloon ride above the McDonnell Ranges, enjoy a historical tour of the early European settlement's jail and Telegraph Station, or try riding a camel along a dry riverbed.

Day 5

Ayers Rock - Uluru: Departing Alice Springs this morning, enjoy a short stop at the camel farm. Continue past Atila (Mt Conner) before arriving at Ayers Rock Resort. This afternoon, visit the Cultural Centre to learn more about the Aboriginal culture. You may see Aboriginal artists at work at the Maruku Arts and Craft Cooperative. Join a guided walk to the beautiful waterhole of Mutitjulu. View Aboriginal cave paintings and hear the legends of Kuniya Tjukurpa (Python Dreaming). Tour the base of Uluru before joining your guide on the Mala Walk and explore fascinating Kantju Gorge. Hear stories about the history of Uluru and ancient bush skills. Later, travel to the sunset strip for a memorable Uluru sunset. A complimentary glass of wine will be served while you view the changing colors of Uluru. Tonight you might like to enjoy the Uluru Aussie Barbecue. Then settle into your 4-star accommodations for the next two nights, the Desert Gardens Hotel.

Day 6

Ayers Rock - Uluru: Rise early this morning and enter Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. Enjoy a revitalizing cup of tea or coffee with our compliments as you witness Uluru at sunrise and see the desert come to life. As the sun is still climbing in the morning sky, travel to the western section of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park to the immense 36 rock domes of Kata Tjuta. Disembark the coach and enjoy a guided walk into Walpa (Olga) Gorge. Along the way, marvel at the sheer walls that flank you as you enter the gorge. Some of the rocks are bunched close together with only narrow precipitous crevices between them. Others, rounded and polished by the wind, are more spaced apart. Look for ancient petroglyphs (rock engravings) on the gorge floor. During the walk, you'll learn about the geography of the domes and the way in which they originally formed. You'll also learn about the variety of wildlife that call the region home. Transfer to your hotel and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 7

Cairns: Transfer to the Ayers Rock/Uluru airport and fly nonstop to Cairns today for a definite change in scenery. Once you reach Cairns airport, a quick 1.5-hour transfer north will drop you off in Port Douglas, a charming seaside town known for its great dining, beaches, and access to the Great Barrier Reef. Enjoy your evening at leisure as you settle into your beachside accommodations.

Day 8

Cairns: Enjoy a full day today out on the Great Barrier Reef with a small group for reef interpretation and a guided snorkel tour. You'll be transported to three spectacular sites on the edge of the Outer Great Barrier Reef at the Agincourt Ribbon Reefs. The snorkeling advisor teaches current use of the equipment and snorkeling techniques and gives a well-researched and informative talk of the biology and history of the reef. Dedicated snorkel crew provide personal in-water assistance and flotation devices for beginners, while the more experienced snorkeler can enjoy unrestricted exploration of spectacular drop-offs and coral pinnacles. Snorkeling is the easiest way to enjoy the colors and variety of fragile corals and fish life found in the shallow lagoons. Or, if you have your certification, you may Scuba dive at these fabulous locations.

Day 9

Cairns: Enjoy today at leisure on the beach and in the charming town of Port Douglas.

Day 10

Sydney: Transfer back to the Cairns airport and fly nonstop to Sydney, the cosmopolitan capital of the South Pacific. Some activity options include: Cruise on the world's most famous harbour for the day. Tour Sydney's beautiful beaches and take a surf lesson. Try your hand at climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge or see a world-class Opera Performance. Enjoy a scenic 20 minute seaplane ride to the award Cottage Point Inn restaurant for a leisurely 3 course a la carte lunch. Dinner reservations can be made upon request.

Day 11

Sydney: Enjoy a day at leisure in Sydney.

Day 12

Sydney: Enjoy another day at leisure in Sydney.

Day 13

Travel home: Wave goodbye to the spectacular Australian continent today as you fly away, arriving home on the same day you depart.
