05 Mar – 17 Mar, 2008 – Milford Sound to Auckland (reverse)

Description: A 12-night journey of New Zealand’s North and South Islands, affording many opportunities to explore the land, meet the people and interact with some of the unique native wildlife. This expedition cruise has only 36 cabins and a maximum of 72 guests per sailing.

Itinerary:

Day 1: Auckland - Mercury Islands

Expedition adventures with Lecturers to remote beaches, caves and possibly a hot water beach. Captain’s Welcome Aboard Cocktails.

Day 2: White Island

Excursion to explore an active volcano, three hours guided walk to the crater. Travel on to Whangara, a small Maori settlement made famous following the filming of the movie Whale Rider.

Day 3: Gisborne

An exclusive Maori traditional welcome, Kapa Haka cultural show and tour of the Marae by the elder of the Ngati Konohi people. Optional touring suggestion: Wine & Garden Tour

Day 4: Napier

An earthquake in 1931 led to the unique rebuilding of this city in art deco style. Optional touring suggestions: Cape Kidnappers Overland Gannet Safari, City Highlights, Wine and Country Tour

Days 5 & 6: Marlborough Sounds

Expeditions with Guest Lecturers of the breathtaking Queen Charlotte Sound and Moturoa Island where we enjoy an abundance of birdlife.

Day 7: Kaikoura

Whale watching, joined by dusky dolphins, seabirds, fur seals and other migratory whale species.

Day 8: Akaroa

The French influenced city of Akaroa, home to penguins and dolphins. Optional touring suggestions: French farm wine tour, Akaroa Seal Colony Safari, Swimming with the Dolphins

Day 9: Dunedin

Home to the world’s largest mainland albatross colony and the world rarest penguin, the Yellowed Eyed Penguin. Optional touring suggestions: Stately Home tour, Larnach Castle Guided Tour, Albatross Centre and Natures Wonders Safari

Day 10: Stewart Island

Exploration of Paterson Inlet and surrounding areas. Guided “Xplorer” and/or Zodiac excursions; walks ashore with naturalists encounter native birds. Optional touring suggestion: Village and Bays Coach Tour.

Day 11: Dusky Fiord

Natural wilderness, sheer cliffs and tumbling waterfalls. Enjoy the view from the Oceanic Discoverer or choose to explore the inlets from Zodiacs.

Day 12: Doubtful Fiord

Doubtful fiord is the deepest of the fiords and will not disappoint. Zodiac exploration with Lecturers. Captains Farewell Cocktails whilst engulfed by the dramatic scenery

Day 13: Milford Sound

Farewell and disembarkation at 8:00am. Coach transfer to Queenstown. We recommend extending your stay in Queenstown for 3 nights to explore the area.
